About us

Established in 2005 as an independent research organization, the Development and Policies Research Center (DEPOCEN) has now gained its reputation among the development and policy researches and consultancy community with its wide range of researches and areas of work.

DEPOCEN has conducted researches on variety of issues from macroeconomic policies, public policy, economics of education, corporate governance and competitiveness, econometric modeling and forecasting, to trade liberalization, poverty reduction, education, public health and survey methods.

Scientific Research

DEPOCEN has conducted research projects on a wide range of issues from macroeconomic policies, public finance, public policy, corporate innovation and competitiveness, econometric modelling and forecasting, trade liberalization, public service, to state-of-the-art impact evaluation of intervention programs in poverty reduction, household welfare, education, public health, water supply and sanitation, and survey methods. Our research outputs have been published in international refereed journals.

Consultation

DEPOCEN has provided high-quality consultancy services for international donors and clients in Vietnam. The Center has long established its reputation as one of the leading survey design and implementation organizations in Vietnam thanks to its extensive experience in conducting large – scale surveys, including household survey and enterprise survey in many development areas such as governance, public service, public sector reform; SMEs; education; technology and innovation; poverty reduction, rural and agricultural development, electrification, water supply and sanitation; public health and HIV/AIDS prevention; and gender equality.

Training

Since 2008, we have provided training sessions on Econometrics, Research and Survey design, statistics softwares (Cspro, SPSS, STATA), Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), M&E system design and set-up, Project Management, and Impact Evaluation for many organizations such as IFAD, Foreign Trade University, Belgium Development Agency, Tan Viet Securities Company and the National Assembly Office and individuals from research institutions, universities, VNGO and INGO in Vietnam. Since 2019, with the need for high-quality training among college students, lecturers, and researchers of economics, finance, and business administration, and the market demand for staff capacity in Data Science, Data Analysis, Economics, the Center for Advanced Studies in Economics and Data Science was officially established from the Development and Policies Research Center (DEPOCEN) with the director of Professor Le Van Cuong (from the French National Center for Scientific Research).

 

Our projects

Determining the prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy in Vietnam

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a complication of diabetes that leads to irreversible blindness if not adequately managed. However, there is currently no population-based data available on the prevalence of DR in Vietnam. High-quality evidence on the prevalence of DR in Vietnam and risk factors associated with this condition is needed to inform the delivery of DR services, the plan for adequate government-level responses, and to advocate for the allocation of the necessary resources to manage the condition....

Child's rights in coffee sourcing sector in Dak Lak

The project aims at increasing awareness on child rights with the focus on child protection and right to education to wide range of targets including children, parents, local government and businesses in the coffee production areas in central of Vietnam. The intervention provides awareness raising activities and capacity building trainings to relevant stakeholders so that they are able to either practice their fundamental rights and create a safe working environment that considers the healthy development...

Making Tobacco Taxation Work in Vietnam

The Government of Vietnam is proposing a radical step in tobacco excise tax reform – proposing to switch from the current purely ad valorem to a mixed excise tax system. According to this proposal a specific rate of VND 1,000 will be levied on every 20-cigarette pack in addition to the ad valorem rate of 75% starting from 1 January 2020. Overall objective of the research is to inform and support the on-going tobacco taxation reform of the Government of Vietnam to reduce smoking in the country....
